 What does A2 mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a recommendation to compare the language aquisition and language skills of learners throughout all European languages. There are 6 levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) describing what learners are able to do and speak after having completed the respective level. Completing A1 implies:

  • Hearing
I can understand familiar words and very basic sentences when the other person is speaking slowly and distinctly.
  • Reading
I can understand familiar names, words and very basic sentences on signs, advertisements or catalogues.
  • Speaking
I can communicate in a simple manner. I am able to use sentences to describe famous people and where I live.
  • Writing
I can write a simple postcard, e.g. a holiday greeting card.
